Links to Sites of Interest

I've been interested in the World Wide Web since its inception and the links on this page are to other sites I've come across that you might find interesting as well.  Many of them deal with aspects of photography or image editing software.  Some are pages of friends or of photographers whose work I find interesting or inspiring. I've also included a link to some sites of general interest as well as my WordPress site.

Photography

  • 500px - A great site with beautiful photographs by others - you can learn a lot by seeing what others have done
  • Flickr - Another wonderful collection of work that others are putting up on the web
  • Instagram - Geared toward cell-phone camera sharing, but has expanded beyond that to all sorts of digital and film photography
  • DIY Photography - Good source of information and tutorials
  • Digital Photography Review - I'm listing it twice - it's great for reviews, but has lots of other information and good forums where you can learn what others are doing
  • Photo Notes - Good unbiased information on cameras and photography
  • Physical Grain - I've shot and developed a lot of film over the years and I'm glad that some people still do even though I'm just shooting digital right now.  This site has some beautiful work
  • Outdoor Photographer - Good resource for tips on shooting landscapes and more - I particularly like the article on How To Shoot The Milky Way
  • A Photographer's Guide to the Milky Way - Another great article on capturing the Milky Way by Andrew Rhodes a photographer and blogger based in the Washington D.C. Northern Virginia area
  • National Geographic Photography - Just what you'd expect from National Geographic - great photos
  • How to Photograph the Night Sky - One more article on night sky photography, but not limited to just the Milky Way - this article appeared in Digital Camera Review, a website that doesn't seem be kept up to date now

Camera Reviews

  • Digital Photography Review - Does a great job and provides lots of detail

  • Imaging Resource Is also a good site for information on camera specs and performance and has a nice comparison page
  • Ken Rockwell - People hate him, people love him - my take is he's interesting but inconsistent
  • Camera Decision Has a nice comparison page.  I don't always agree with their bottom line, but I like the way the information is organized
  • Steve Huff Photo Is another well known site, but I don't use it as much as others
  • Peta Pixel Is a general photographic site that also posts some good reviews
  • Fuji vs. Fuji Is focused on Fuji and I shoot Fuji in addition to Canon gear and so I find it useful - especially in comparing Fuji lenses
  • The Wire Cutter - Not limited to photography, but a good site for all sorts of tech information

Photography Software

  • Corel Photo-Paint - In my opinion this is the best image editing software out there - it's only available as part of the CorelDRAW suite, however
  • ACDSee Ultimate - This my "go-to" software for organizing and "developing" images
  • DxO Optics Pro - It doesn't handle as many RAW formats as ACDSee, but it has the best noise reduction function on the market
  • Affinity Photo - Fantastic software that rivals Adobe Photoshop for much less money and with a smaller digital footprint
  • Capture One - Excellent software - if I'd started with it I'd list it first, but I started elsewhere
  • Adobe Photoshop - It's the industry leader, but I prefer Corel and others for price and performance
  • Adobe Lightroom - I'd probably use this or Capture One if I hadn't been with ACDSee so long
  • Iridient Developer - Excellent for developing Fuji RAW files
  • AfterShot Pro - Corel's entry in the RAW developing world is very good
  • Corel PaintShop Pro - I started with this when JASC first came out with it, but Photo-Paint is better

Photographic Equipment

  • Lens Rentals.com - Excellent resource for renting cameras, lenses, etc., and for information about photography in general
  • Shotkit - Good site for information on all sorts of camera gear
  • Think Tank - The best all-around site for camera bags
  • Adorama - All of my experiences in ordering new equipment or trading in older equipment have been great
  • B & H Photo - Another good site dedicated to photography
  • Ona Bags - One of my favorites for mirrorless camera bags - particularly the Bowery
  • Domke Bags - This is the other favorite for mirrorless camera bags - particularly the F-5XB
  • Amazon.com - Of course, I have to list this site - I remember when it was books only, but it's where the majority of my gear comes nowadays
  • Canon - I've been shooting Canon since my first digital camera - a PowerShot S10
  • Fujifilm - I only started with Fujifilm this year, but I love the X series mirrorless cameras and super-sharp lenses

Photographers and Bloggers

  • Ashleigh Coleman - Time Magazine listed her as "the" photographer to follow on Instagram, but her work transcends any particular genre.  Take the time to see her vision in both digital and film formats.
  • Geraint Smith - I learned of his work through a mutual friend - stunning photos of the American Southwest
  • Dan Loh - another photographer discovered through a mutual friend - this one a Pulitzer Prize winning New York photographer
  • Eric Kim - I come across his work often - he has some interesting posts and some helpful reviews as well
  • Mugs Balakrishnan - Interesting and compelling urban photography
  • Michael Pretzsch - Film photographer using Leica and Hasselblad equipment displays his work on his site Permundum
  • Street Photography London - Nicholas Goodden and others' work on display
  • Nick Turpin - New York iconic street photographer
  • Nicholas Goodden - London street photographer
  • Phillip Reeve - Photographer and team based in Germany.  A lot of interesting articles on manual lenses and landscapes
